Intent

St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding the fairness of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at St Matthew’s, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Please see the PE Curriculum Map which outlines the progression of skills for each year group. These outline how key skills are developed, revisited, assessed and built upon during EYFS to Year 6.

Implementation

PE at St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, athletics, yoga, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor and adventure.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. A lunch time sports coach is available each day to encourage children to have an active lunchtime play.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Each year a small group of children in KS2 are invited to become ‘mentors’ for each group at lunch times. They build special relationships with the children and have had special training from Bully Buster on how to be a mentor. They also have a zone on the playground where they will do a physical activity for the children to be involved with.

Children in Years 2, 4 and 6 are invited on residential trips which always include outdoor adventurous activities for the children to experience.

Children in Year 3, 4 and 5 have a six week block of swimming lesson throughout the academic year. Any child who is unable to swim the 25 metres at the end of Year 5 attend the Year 6 top up sessions over a 2 week period in the summer term.

We also encourage active playtime, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

EYFS Physical Development is a prime area of learning. We plan opportunities to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children are also helped to understand the importance of physical activity. They learn to make healthy choices in relation to exercise and food. We aim to deliver this with a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities (see EYFS policy).

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
