Year 5 Class - 5E - Spring - 2018 - 2019

Things to remember;
Our dance day is Tuesday.
Our PE day is Wednesday.
Please make sure P.E kits stay in school all week. Tracksuits will be needed shortly as the weather starts to get a bit colder!
Homework is given out on Monday and should be returned completed on a Friday. Each week there will be a Maths and an English task connected to the work we will be doing in class that week.
Spellings can be practised every night using the look, say, cover, write, check method. And times tables can be practised with speed and accuracy sheets.
These skills are very important as we prepare for Year 6!
Please also try to read every night! Children who read every night and bring their reading records in every day will be rewarded with certificates and book marks as they progress up our reading ladder.
We appreciate all of your time and help and hope to make lots of progress and have lots of fun this year!

Walker Art Gallery Trip
We had a great visit to the Walker Art Gallery, where we had a workshop about how the Greek Myths are depicted through painings.
Making Dips

This week we had a cooking session in the hall we were making dips. We made salsa, hummus and guacamole.

Science High Flyers at St John Bosco
Some of our girls spent the afternoon at St John Bosco taking part in the 'High Flyer' science classes.
This time we used data loggers and made circuits.
Sign Language Lessons
Today we started our sign language lessons with 'Hands' from Deaf Active. We will be building up to a sign language performance in 10 weeks time.
Hate Crime Workshop
The Police visited Year 5 this week ton inform us about Hate Crime. They taught us what it was and what we can do if we see it taking place.
P4C Money
As part of this week's P4C we discussed whether the world would be a better place without money.
We concluded that maybe it would be but something else might be used instead.
Investigating insulators of heat
As part of Science Week we have been investigating which material makes the best insulator.
What would a future be like without trees?

We started our 'Rainforest' topic with a philosophical discussion about what the world would be like without trees. We used 'The Great Kapok Tree' as a stimulus.

Our final thoughts were that the planet would not survive with trees so we all owe it to future generations to make sure they are not all cut down.
