St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School understands the need for all pupils to develop their Scientific ability as an essential component of all subjects and as a subject in its own right. A good understanding of scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding helps to support pupils work across the curriculum.

Intent
 
At St Matthew’s, it is our intention to recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We give the teaching and learning of science the prominence it requires. The Scientific area of learning is concerned with increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, and with developing skills associated with Science as a process of enquiry. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. We intend to build a Science curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and build a Science curriculum which, enables children to become enquiry based learners. Science in our school is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation, as well as using and applying these skills. The staff at St Matthew’s Catholic ensure that all children are exposed to high quality teaching and learning experiences, which allow children to explore their outdoor environment and locality, thus developing their scientific enquiry and investigative skills. They are immersed in scientific vocabulary, which aids children’s knowledge and understanding not only of the topic they are studying, but of the world around them.
 
Implementation
 
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Planning for science is a process in which all teachers are involved to ensure that the school gives full coverage of, ‘The National Curriculum programmes of study for Science 2014’ and, ‘Understanding of the World’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Science teaching at St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School involves adapting and extending the curriculum to match all pupils’ needs. Science is taught as discrete units and lessons to ensure coverage. Teachers adapt planning to suit their children’s interests, current events, their own teaching style, the use of any support staff and the resources available.

We ensure that all children are provided with rich learning experiences that aim to:

  • Provide a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning should show progression across all key stages within the strands of Science.
  • Give children have access to key language and meanings in order to understand and readily apply to their written, mathematical and verbal communication of their skills.
  • Use a range of resources to develop the children's knowledge and understanding that is integral to their learning and develop their understanding of working scientifically.
  • Plan and deliver a comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning should plan for practical investigative opportunities within Science lessons.
  • Help children reflect on previous learning and cross curricular links will be made wherever possible
  • Build in opportunities to build on prior knowledge and link ideas together, enabling them to question and become enquiry based learners.
  • Attainment will be assessed each term. This data will be used to adapt future planning to allow continual improvement of outcomes.
  
Impact
 
  • Most children will achieve age related expectations in Science at the end of their cohort year.
  • Children will retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context.
  • Children will be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
  • Children will work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
  • Children will be able to explain the process they have taken and be able to reason scientifically.
